How to wrap a bottle of wine, plus an easy persimmon puree recipe to pair it with - it's the perfect handmade holiday gift!

I am generally one of those people in a sweater that says "This Girl Loves Christmas" beginning November 1st, but this year is a different story. We don't have a tree, there are still pumpkins on our porch, and I have done a minimal amount of Christmas shopping.

I didn't realize that the girls' Christmas cookie exchange was this weekend until two days ago. So, I had two days to throw together a white elephant gift, and bake 2 dozen cookies, all with a 3 day basketball tournament going on. It's been one of those weeks.

Last night, I whipped up a batch of my favorite chocolate chip cookies, and gathered my white elephant gift - a boring ol' bottle of champagne. I didn't even have time to wrap the wine bottle, but I did pair it with some Wine Glass Writers, so it wasn't a complete failure!

This got me thinking, that I am probably not alone in the oh-sh!t-Christmas-is-next-weekend frenzy, so I thought I would share how to wrap a bottle of wine so that it doesn't look like 'just a bottle of wine' which I learned from the super talented Heather Bullard. I paired this with a jar of persimmon puree that makes a perfectly delicious holiday Bellini.

CHAMPAGNE & PERSIMMON PUREE

Makes 3 small jars, keeps for about a month in the fridge

  • 4-5 persimmons, mostly peeled & roughly chopped
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 3 cups water

Step 1: Combine all ingredients in a medium saucepan, bring to a low simmer and allow the persimmons to soften, about 15 minutes. Careful to not let the syrup become so hot that it turns to candy.

Step 2: Once the persimmons are softened, pour the mixture into a blender, and puree until smooth. Be very careful not to burn yourself during this step, leave a slight opening at the top of the blender so that a vacuum seal does not form due to the heat.

Step 3: Divide evenly into small jars (Weck is always my favorite!), and finish with some ribbon & bells! You can give this with a bottle of Champagne, or enjoy it yourself this Christmas!

How to Wrap a Wine Bottle

Step 1: Cut a piece of wrapping paper (my favorite paper) long enough to cover the entire bottle.

Step 2: Use markers or stamps to decorate the paper (that is, if the party didn't start 15 minutes ago, and you still have to do your hair).

Step 3: Place the paper face down, and lay the bottle diagonally over it so that the top is in line with the top corner of the paper.

Step 4: Use a piece of tape to secure the paper to the bottle, and wrap like a sub sandwich. Use a second piece of tape to keep it all in place.

Step 5: Fold the bottom of the paper inward and secure with tape. Use twine or ribbon to cinch the top.

I love using cheapo shipping paper for wrapping gifts, I have had rolls that last me for years! It's an inexpensive way to achieve minimalist wrapping. What is your favorite last minute gift?
