A French Country Inspired Dining Room | ORC Week 1

Hello friends, how are you this week?? If you follow along on Instagram, you may have seen my post announcing my participation in this fall's One Room Challenge. If not, let me fill you in...

Over the next six weeks, I will be re-designing a space in our home, and sharing every little detail of the process right here. I will be designing alongside 20 other wonderfully talented bloggers, and I am feeling a bit like a small fish in a big pond. To have my name next to Old Home LoveThe House that Lars Built, and Waiting on Martha is really exciting.

If you haven't heard of the One Room Challenge before, it is a bi-annual event hosted by Calling it Home featuring 20 bloggers as they renovate a single room in their home. There are a multitude of companies that collaborate with the designers, and House Beautiful so kindly shares all of the finished spaces at the end of the 6 weeks. It's stressful, fun, and a creative high.

If you are visiting me for the first time, thank you for stopping by! My name is Chloe, and I run this blog, Boxwood Avenue in-between helping my husband run our cattle ranch. We live in northern California on a 100 year old ranch in a town of 99 people. I feel pretty lucky to live in the middle. of. nowhere. on over 100,000 acres of land...Oh, and it just wouldn't be right for me to not mention Elderberry and Buckwheat, my two precious goats. I hope you enjoy following along over the next few weeks during the one room challenge!

the space...

This will be my first time participating in the ORC, and I have decided to tackle our dining room. It is at the heart of our home, and it being unfinished is a real burden. We host dinners at least once a week, and since the weather has cooled down, we have resorted to eating by candlelight because there isn't a light fixture in the room. Our "romantic candlelit dinners" with friends have turned into anticipated gatherings, and honestly, I think I will still insist on lighting heaps of candles once the space is done. I will however, be very grateful for a working light fixture and something other than stark white walls.

The first order of business here is for me to show you the "before" images of the room. This is tricky because we have already renovated a few aspects of it. Previously, the space was a formal living room with golden carpet, disintegrating curtains, and decaying furniture. When we remodeled our kitchen, we decided to turn the old living room into a large dining area where we could house the entire ranch crew for large meals after brandings and long days of moving cattle. Just take a peek at what it looked like when we moved in...

We removed the carpet and replaced the floors with laminate wood by Pergo, which we love, and have used throughout the entire house. We painted over the eggshell colored walls with Bistro White, and added thick baseboards. This made the room livable, but it is far from cozy. Over the next six weeks I hope to transform this white, box of a room into a beautiful dining space that is fit for long, relaxing evenings with friends.
