Summer is coming, I can feel it! Can’t you? I love waking up in the morning to the crisp air of spring, there’s something that just smells like warmer weather is on the horizon. With warmer weather, comes outdoor activities – my favorite of those being alfresco dining. I’ve teamed up with Chinet® brand to bring you my favorite tips for throwing a casual backyard BBQ!
Tips for throwing a backyard BBQ
THINK EASY PEASY!
The key word here is casual! The last thing you want to do as a hostess is spend all of your time coming in and out of the kitchen worrying about the dishes piling up in the sink! Chinet® Classic White™ paper plates are an excellent option for dining outdoors, especially when you’re serving a large group of people. I like to place out a galvanized trash can for guests to toss their used plates because it allows easy composting & recycling!
GO FOR THE GREEN!
...and purple, and yellow. Heck, go for the whole rainbow! I know how delicious a good ol’ fashioned hot dog is. Trust me. But resist the urge! Head to your favorite farmer’s market, or raid your own garden for fresh ingredients. The food will be so much more meaningful with a little extra time and effort put into the menu!
PREPARE AN OUTDOOR BAR AREA.
This is admittedly my favorite part of the BBQ, not because I like a good glass of wine (which by now, y’all know I do!), but because I love creating a fun space where people can quench their thirst. Put out ice buckets and fill up sealed mason jars with your drink of choice, then toss them into the buckets for easy drinking – because who doesn’t love a sealable drink? Which leads me to…
GAMES AREN'T JUST FOR KIDS!
One of the best parts of throwing a backyard BBQ is the games! My aunt and uncle made us a corn hole set for my college graduation, and we use it endlessly during the summer months. It’s a great way to lighten the mood and will keep kids busy for hours!
Plan ahead and prepare!
As I mentioned above, you really don’t want to be going in and out of the kitchen, so plan ahead, read: prepare everything ahead of time. Make the salads early, and add the dressing last minute. Marinate the chicken ahead of time, and bring it out on a Chinet® paper plate for easy tossing. I also like to figure out exactly how many tongs, spatulas, and serving platters I am going to need, and have those ready to go so I don’t hear, “Babe can you grab me a platter?” while I’m mid conversation.
Why the Chinet® Brand?
Their sustainability practices is what really got me on board. I don’t love the idea of using paper plates, but when I read that Chinet® Classic White™ plates are all compostable – meaning, they’re made from 100% pre-consumer recycled material, and can be put right into your compost pile. HELLO! I can support that! I can’t tell you how much it bothers me to still see Styrofoam plates being used in schools and restaurants. This is a huge selling point for me: get me out of dishes duty, and I can feel good about it knowing that the products can be composted. Plus, Chinet® Classic White™ napkins are the only napkins on the market that are SFI certified. After knowing this, anytime I find myself reaching for paper napkins, I know I will reach for Chinet® Classic White™.
