Valentine’s Day Sugar Cookies FAQ:

Room temperature butter for sugar cookies:

For perfectly creamed butter, you want your butter to be slightly cooler than room temperature. You want to be able to blend the butter easily, but avoid warm butter. I have found that taking the butter out of the refrigerator about 1 hour before I use it gives me the perfect temperature for creaming!

How to frost with royal icing:

Royal icing is very easy to prepare! This recipe doesn’t require meringue powder or egg whites, and comes out perfectly! Simply mix powdered sugar with a splash of milk. Only add as much milk as needed to create a consistency slightly thicker than glue. For a better texture, try sifting the powdered sugar in! Add in a few drops of red food coloring to tint the royal icing.

To frost with royal icing, you don’t need any fancy tools. You can simply use a ziplock baggie! Fill the baggies with the royal icing and cut a VERY small hole in one of the bottom corners of the bag. The icing will come out quickly if your hole is too big. You want the hole to be about the size of a toothpick. Squeeze the ziplock bag onto the cookie to create a pattern. Polka dots are very easy! To flood the cookie, outline the cookie with icing, then squeeze icing into the center and use the back of a spoon or knife to spread the icing over the entire cookie.
