I recently had a reader write in asking if I could share my insights for painting wood paneling. She told me that she was so excited to see my entryway because she had been searching for painted wood paneling ideas that had a traditional and classic feel. She mentioned that she hadn’t found anything that wasn’t shabby chic, something she really wanted to avoid.
This got me excited to write a blog post on the topic, because i really love our painted wood paneling! In fact, even if I had the budget to completely renovate our entryway with painted paneling… I wouldn’t do it! I LOVE the way our painted wood paneling turned out, and I want to share my experience with you!
If you’re reading this, I’m guess you are either a loyal reader (THANK YOU!) or you landed here because you’re in search of ideas to paint your old wood paneling.
Do you have a house that was built in the 60s and you’re facing the remodeling dilemmas that come with houses built in that time period?
it seems like wood paneling was the shiplap of the 60s. Wood paneling is found in so many mid century homes. The wood paneling can be beautiful, but it doesn’t necessarily fit a traditional or transitional style.
You can either remove the wood paneling altogether…or you can paint it!
How to paint wood paneling:
-
Use a primer that will create a barrier between the wood and the paint. Kilz is a very good brand that will give you good results.
-
Paint!
That’s it! It’s very easy to update old wood paneling by painting it!
Tips for painting wood paneling:
-
WASH well, and dust before painting. I wish we would have followed this tip, which is why I am telling you! The wood paneling is very flat and lacks texture on the surface, so any bit of dust or dirt is going to show up under the paint. Wash the walls very well and allow them to dry completely, then use a dust cloth or something that will get rid of any lint or residue before painting. This will help you achieve a very polished and professional look!
-
Add fresh baseboards or molding. This will help elevate the look and make it feel less shabby chic and give you a traditional and classic look…think Ralph Lauren.
